How this is calculated
- Volume in cubic feet = length × width × (depth in inches ÷ 12).
- Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard.
- Order volume = cubic yards × (1 + settling allowance).
- Tons = cubic yards × tons per cubic yard for the material.
Before you order
- Weight per cubic yard moves with moisture and stone size. Wet material can run 10-15% heavier than the figures here, and a quarry ticket is the only exact number.
- Gravel compacts. The 10% default covers settling on a normal spread; go higher over soft ground.
- A new driveway is usually built in layers - a coarse base, then a finer top - and each layer wants its own calculation.
