How this is calculated
- Regular hours = hours up to the overtime threshold.
- Overtime hours = hours between the overtime and double-time thresholds.
- Gross = regular + (OT × rate × multiplier) + (DT × rate × multiplier).
- True cost = gross × (1 + payroll burden).
Before you order
- Federal law requires 1.5× over 40 hours in a workweek for non-exempt employees. Some states add daily overtime — California is 1.5× past 8 hours a day and 2× past 12.
- The overtime rate is based on the REGULAR rate of pay, which includes non-discretionary bonuses and shift differentials, not just the base wage.
- Salaried does not automatically mean exempt. Misclassification is one of the most expensive wage-and-hour mistakes a small employer can make.
