How this is calculated
- Volume in cubic feet = length × width × (compacted depth ÷ 12).
- Weight in pounds = volume × density. Hot mix runs about 145 lb per cubic foot compacted.
- Tons = pounds ÷ 2,000, plus the over-order allowance.
Before you order
- This is COMPACTED depth. Loose mix drops roughly 20-25% under the roller, so 3 in finished is closer to 4 in laid.
- Asphalt has to go down hot and get rolled before it cools. Ordering short and waiting on a second truck leaves a cold joint that will be the first thing to fail.
- A driveway is only as good as its base. New asphalt over a soft or unprepared base will alligator inside a couple of winters whatever the tonnage says.
- Plants have minimum loads and often shut for the season in cold climates. Check both before scheduling.
