Grout Calculator

Grout use depends far more on joint width and tile size than on the area. Enter all three and this returns the pounds and bags.

How this is calculated

  • Grout per square foot ≈ ((tile length + tile width) ÷ (length × width)) × joint width × tile thickness × 86.5.
  • Small tiles have far more joint per square foot than large ones, which is why mosaic uses several times the grout of a large-format tile.
  • Total = area × pounds per square foot × (1 + waste).

Before you order

  • This is an estimate and manufacturers' coverage charts vary. Check the bag for the product you are actually using.
  • Sanded grout is for joints 1/8 in and wider; unsanded is for narrower joints and is required for polished stone that sand would scratch.
  • Mix only what you can work in about 30 minutes, and do not re-temper with extra water — it weakens the grout and causes colour variation.
  • Epoxy grout uses different quantities entirely and is not covered by this calculation.
