How this is calculated
- Net earnings from self-employment = net profit × 92.35%.
- Social Security = 12.4% on net earnings up to the annual wage base, minus any W-2 wages already counted toward it.
- Medicare = 2.9% on all net earnings, with no cap.
- Half the SE tax is deductible against income tax, which is why the income tax line is calculated after subtracting it.
Before you order
- This is a federal estimate only. State and local income tax are not included and in some states are substantial.
- The Social Security wage base changes every year. The default here is the 2025 figure — check the current one before relying on it.
- An additional 0.9% Medicare surtax applies above $200,000 single or $250,000 married filing jointly and is not modelled here.
- Quarterly estimated payments are generally due in April, June, September and January. Underpaying triggers penalties even if you settle up in April.
- This is a planning tool, not tax advice. Confirm with a CPA before filing.
