How this is calculated
- Wall area = perimeter × wall height.
- Gable area = ½ × gable width × gable rise, for each gable. A gable is a triangle, so it is half of the rectangle that would contain it.
- Net area = wall + gables − doors and windows.
- Order area = net × (1 + waste %).
- Squares = order area ÷ 100. Siding, like roofing, is sold by the square.
- Boxes = squares ÷ 2, rounded up. A standard box of vinyl siding covers two squares.
Before you order
- Only subtract openings you are actually leaving bare. Many crews deliberately do not deduct small windows, because the offcuts around them are unusable anyway.
- Step waste to 15% for a house with a lot of corners, or if you are running a pattern that has to line up.
- Trim, corner posts, J-channel, starter strip and soffit are separate and not included here.
