How this is calculated

  • Cubic feet = length × width × (depth in inches ÷ 12) × quantity.
  • Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. A cubic yard is 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft.
  • Tons = cubic yards × tons per cubic yard for the material.
  • Gallons = cubic feet × 7.48052.

Before you order

  • 27, not 9. A cubic yard is three feet in every direction, so it is 27 cubic feet — halving that to 9 is the single most common error in this conversion.
  • Tonnage figures assume typical moisture. Wet material weighs more, and a scale ticket is the only exact number.
