How this is calculated

  • Effective coverage width = board face width + gap between boards.
  • Linear feet = area ÷ (coverage width ÷ 12).
  • Boards = linear feet with waste ÷ stock length, rounded up.

Before you order

  • Use the ACTUAL width, not the nominal. A 2x6 is 5.5 in wide, a 1x6 is 5.5 in, and using 6 will leave you short by about 9%.
  • Choose a stock length that divides into your run with the least offcut. Buying 16 ft boards for a 10 ft run wastes 6 ft every time.
  • Deck boards need a gap for drainage and movement; interior flooring is laid tight. The gap field changes the answer materially.
