How this is calculated

  • Studs = (wall length × 12) ÷ spacing, plus one, plus about 4 per opening for kings, jacks and cripples.
  • Plate material = wall length × 3, for a single bottom plate and a double top plate.
  • Board feet = (stud linear feet + plate feet) × board feet per linear foot for the stud size.
  • Sheathing = wall area ÷ 32 sq ft per 4×8 sheet.

Before you order

  • Header sizing depends on span and what is bearing above. This counts how many you need, not what they should be — that is a span table or an engineer.
  • Board feet is how lumber is priced in bulk, so this is the number to take to a yard for a quote.
  • Fire blocking, hold-downs, shear nailing patterns and hurricane ties are code items that vary by region and are not in this take-off.
