How this is calculated
- Field studs = (wall length × 12) ÷ spacing, rounded up, plus one for the far end.
- Corners = 3 studs each in traditional framing. Two-stud California corners use fewer and leave room for insulation.
- Wall intersections = 2 extra studs each for the backing.
- Each opening = roughly 4 extra studs for king studs, jacks and cripples.
- Plate material = wall length × number of plates (3 for a double top plate).
- Cut length = wall height − plate thickness (1.5 in each).
Before you order
- Advanced framing at 24 in centres with two-stud corners uses noticeably less lumber and leaves more room for insulation, but it has to be designed for — it is not a substitution you make on site.
- Headers over openings are sized by span and load and are not counted here.
- Order 5-10% over. Crowned, twisted and split studs get culled on every job.
