How this is calculated
- Squares = area × (1 + waste) ÷ 100.
- Bundles = squares × bundles per square. Most shingles are 3 to the square; heavy architectural can be 4 or 5.
- Nails ≈ 320 per square at 4 per shingle; high-wind areas require 6, which is 480.
Before you order
- High-wind and coastal zones require six nails per shingle instead of four, and specific starter and ridge details. Getting this wrong voids the manufacturer warranty.
- Ice-and-water membrane is required at eaves in cold climates, usually to a point 24 in inside the exterior wall line. That is separate from the field underlayment counted here.
- Never use a bundle count from a satellite measurement without applying the pitch multiplier first.
