How this is calculated
- Volume in cubic feet = area × (depth in inches ÷ 12).
- Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27.
- One cubic yard covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch deep, so at 3 inches it covers 108.
- Bags = cubic feet ÷ bag size. Most bags are 2 cubic feet.
Before you order
- Bulk is dramatically cheaper past about three cubic yards — that is roughly 40 bags, and the delivery fee is usually less than the bag premium.
- Do not pile mulch against trunks. Mulch volcanoes hold moisture against the bark and rot the tree they were meant to protect.
- Deeper is not better. Past about 4 inches mulch sheds water instead of holding it, and roots suffocate.
- Dyed mulch fades in a season. Undyed hardwood lasts longer but greys.
